What to Do After Opening an Account: Six Things in the First Month

Updated 2026-09-19·5 min read·Settling In

Most people treat the account number as the finish line. In practice, how usable the account becomes depends on what you do in the first month. Online banking not enrolled, a mistyped mobile number, a temporary address on file, an account that never moves — each of these costs another counter trip later. Six things to finish, plus two habits to keep. No bank is named and no figures are quoted.

Six Things to Finish in the First Month

One, confirm the account is fully usable. An account number does not mean transfers work. Card issuance, online or mobile banking, and outbound transfer capability are frequently separate steps arranged differently at each bank. Ask at the counter how each one is activated and whether separate enrolment is needed.

Two, verify the mobile number and email on file. These decide whether you ever receive one-time codes and account notices. A typo means you cannot log in and cannot tell why. Have a test message sent to your own phone before you leave.

Three, enrol in online banking and log in once. Do not let the first login happen on the day you need money.

Four, run a small interbank transfer. Confirm limits, settlement timing and how fees are charged behave as you expect before it matters.

Five and Six: Address and Records

Five, update your address once it settles. Many people open an account while in temporary or short-let housing. A stale address or failed delivery triggers an information refresh request, and in serious cases account functions are restricted. Update after moving rather than waiting for the bank.

Six, archive the opening records. The receipt, account number, customer number, branch name and contact details, and the exact way you wrote your specimen signature — photograph and store them separately. You will need them for loss reporting, unfreezing, closure, or proving ownership to a third party.

Note the signature point in particular. Counters here compare signatures against the specimen on file in many situations, so write every future signature the way you wrote it at opening. It is the least glamorous item on this list and the one that most often blocks people at the worst moment.

Two Long-Term Habits

Do not let the account sleep. Accounts without transactions for a long period become dormant, functions are restricted, and restoring them usually means a counter visit. The simplest prevention is natural low-value activity, such as routing one recurring expense through it.

Refresh documents before they expire. After a passport reissue, visa renewal or ACR I-Card update, the bank copy of your file is out of date. Most banks periodically require refreshed information, and doing it proactively is far easier than doing it after functions are limited.

Separately, unusual large or frequent flows can trigger queries or temporary restrictions; that is routine under the anti-money-laundering framework. Keeping source documentation for every large inflow is the most effective prevention.

Think One Step Ahead: Leaving the Country

Knowing what the final step looks like helps in month one. When you leave the Philippines for good, the account should either be properly maintained or formally closed. Leaving it unattended is the worst option: stale records, dormancy and undelivered notices usually mean you must return in person when you finally need it.

Scope note. Activation methods, refresh cycles and dormancy rules differ by bank and change over time; treat the opening bank current published terms as authoritative and have an adviser confirm anything you cannot verify. No bank is named, none is ranked, and no figures are quoted. Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do after opening a bank account?
In the first month: confirm full usability (card, online banking and transfers are often activated separately), verify the mobile number and email on file, enrol and log in to online banking once, run a small interbank transfer, update your address once housing settles, and archive the opening receipt, account and customer numbers, branch contacts and your specimen signature style.
Can I transfer money as soon as the account exists?
Not necessarily. Card collection, online banking enrolment and outbound transfer activation are separate steps at many banks. Ask at the counter how each is switched on, and run a small test transfer within the first month rather than on the day you need it.
Why does the signature matter so much?
Counters compare signatures against the specimen recorded at opening. Write every future signature the same way; drift can cause transactions to be returned or extra verification to be required, often at inconvenient moments such as loss reporting or closure.
What happens if I never use the account?
Accounts with no transactions for an extended period become dormant, with restricted functions, and reactivation generally requires a counter visit. Routing one recurring expense through the account is the simplest prevention. Dormancy rules differ by bank.
