The Two Reliable Routes: Menu Code and Carrier App
Every carrier has one main menu short code that opens a text menu containing balance, promos and subscriptions. Learning that single entry point beats memorising a dozen scattered codes that change with every app release.
| Carrier (and sub-brand) | Main menu | Official app | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Globe, TM | Dial *143# | GlobeOne | Both brands share the entry point |
| Smart, TNT | Dial *123# | Smart app | Both brands share the entry point |
| DITO | App-first | DITO app | Check the official site for current codes |
Mechanics: these are USSD codes, typed into the dialler in full, asterisk and hash included, then dialled — not sent as a text. A menu appears; you reply with the number of the option you want.
Two things worth knowing. USSD needs no data, which makes it the reliable option precisely when you have run out of internet. The app shows more — promo names, remaining allocations, expiry timestamps and recent charges — but only works when you are online. Keep both available: app for routine checks, code as the fallback.
Load, Data and Promo Are Three Different Things
Philippine prepaid works in two steps: you top up load (general credit), then you spend that load on a promo — a bundle with a fixed number of days containing data, calls and texts. Each has its own balance and its own expiry.
| Item | What it is | Where to check | What happens when it runs out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load | General credit in pesos | Balance option in the main menu | You cannot buy promos; pay-per-use services stop |
| Promo / data | A bundle bought with load | Promo or subscription list, or the app | Data may revert to pay-per-use, draining load |
| Promo validity | The bundle's expiry date | Clearest in the app | Expires outright; leftovers rarely carry over |
The classic misdiagnosis: internet stops working, you check the balance, see money, and blame the network — when the promo simply expired. The reverse also happens: the promo is fine but load is quietly draining, which means something outside the bundle is charging you.
How to top up and buy bundles in the first place is covered in loading a prepaid phone in the Philippines.
Checking Remaining Data and Promo Expiry
The carrier app is the most accurate source, because it shows the promo name, the remaining allocation and the expiry time together.
Via USSD the pattern is: dial the main menu, pick the option related to promos, subscriptions or "my account", and read the list of active bundles. Menu wording differs by carrier and changes between releases, so rather than listing sub-menu numbers, learn the keywords to look for: Balance, Promo, Subscription, Validity or Expiry, and Unsubscribe or Stop.
- Promos are bought outright, not billed monthly. You purchase a fixed number of days; when they are up, the bundle is simply gone — unless you subscribed to an auto-renewing variant.
- After a promo expires, data can revert to pay-per-use. A phone left with mobile data switched on after the bundle lapses is one of the most common causes of disappearing load. Turning mobile data off before expiry is the simplest guard.
- Unused allocation does not roll over into the next bundle in most cases.
Carriers structure their bundles quite differently, which is worth understanding before you choose — see Globe versus Smart, decided by where you live and the full SIM and data plan guide.
Finding Out Your Own Number
Two dependable methods: open the carrier app and read it off the account page, or call or text a friend from the SIM and have them read it back.
Short codes for "what is my number" are the least stable part of every carrier's menu — they change between releases, and most codes circulating online are years out of date. The two methods above work on any carrier at any time.
Three other places the number turns up:
- The SIM's packaging card usually prints it — do not throw it away in the first week.
- Phone settings under About phone → SIM status sometimes display it, depending on handset and carrier provisioning.
- The SIM registration confirmation message normally contains it. Registration has been mandatory since the SIM Registration Act (Republic Act No. 11934) took effect — the process for foreign nationals is in registering a Philippine SIM as a foreigner.
Postpaid: You Are Reading a Bill, Not a Balance
Postpaid accounts have no load balance — what you check is the current bill, the billing cycle and usage against your allowance. There is essentially one entry point: the carrier app or the account centre on its website.
- Amount due and due date are usually on the app's home screen; late payment affects service and your record with the carrier.
- Usage against allowance matters because postpaid plans include a fixed allocation and charge for excess, which is the most common reason a bill jumps.
- Add-on subscriptions — streaming, storage, value-added services — appear as recurring lines in the itemised bill.
Foreign nationals applying for postpaid generally need identity documents and proof of address, so most people run prepaid for the first months. If your main need is laptop internet, a pocket WiFi device is a third option — compared in pocket WiFi versus prepaid data in the Philippines.
Load Keeps Disappearing: Trace It in This Order
This sequence identifies the cause in most cases.
| Step | Likely cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Value-added SMS subscription | Subscription list; scroll your inbox | Reply with the keyword in that message |
| 2 | Expired promo, data now pay-per-use | Check promo expiry | Turn data off, buy a new bundle |
| 3 | Calls or texts to special or overseas numbers | Call and message history | Different rates apply |
| 4 | Auto-renewing bundle | Look for auto-renew flags in the list | Keep or unsubscribe |
| 5 | Load itself has a validity period | Validity note on the balance screen | Top up per the carrier's rules |
Step one deserves the most attention. Value-added SMS services — horoscopes, ringtones, quizzes, prize draws — frequently treat a single reply as consent to a daily or per-message charge. To spot them, scroll through messages from four- and five-digit numbers; the charge notices are usually sitting right there.
To unsubscribe, reply with the keyword stated in that message to the same short code — STOP or CANCEL plus a service name is common, but it varies. If replying does not work, use the subscription management page in the carrier app, or the official support channels listed on the carrier's website.
Prevention is simpler than cure: do not reply to unknown short-code messages and do not tap links in them. That habit also blocks the most common local SMS scam pattern.
Topped Up but Nothing Arrived: Four Steps
Wait, cross-check, keep the receipt, then contact official support.
- Wait a few minutes before checking again. Both sari-sari store loading and electronic channels can lag, and repeating the transaction risks double charges.
- Cross-check through the other route. If the app shows nothing, run the USSD code, and vice versa. Only when both show nothing is it genuinely missing.
- Keep proof. Ask for a receipt or a screenshot at the store; keep the reference number for electronic top-ups. Without proof, a trace request goes nowhere.
- Contact official support through the app or the channels published on the carrier's website. Never arrange "assisted loading" with someone who approached you on social media — that is a standard scam script.
If a code returns nothing at all, the usual causes are an incomplete entry (missing the asterisk or hash), not pressing dial, weak signal, or a SIM whose registration is not complete and therefore restricted.
