Ordered by how often each one turns out to be the culprit. Tools required: an adjustable spanner, an old toothbrush and a bowl of white vinegar.

  • 1. The tap aerator. Local water is not soft, and sediment stirred up after every interruption ends up in that little mesh. Unscrew it, soak twenty minutes in vinegar, brush it clean, refit. This alone explains a large share of kitchen taps that suddenly went weak.

  • The time pattern — five consecutive days, almost no flow between seven and nine in the morning, normal otherwise.

First, know which company serves you. Metro Manila is split between two concessionaires. Manila Water covers the east zone — the eastern side of Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan, Marikina, Taguig, most of Quezon City and parts of Rizal. Specification points worth settling before anyone starts work:

  • Cistern capacity sized by household and by the ability to ride out a two-day interruption. Planned outages are common enough that oversizing is the safer error.

Water pressure is the easiest defect to detect during a viewing and almost the least tested. Discovering after signing that the top-floor shower trickles costs vastly more than three minutes of checking. Run this routine:

  1. Open the shower and the basin together and watch whether the shower collapses. This approximates real household use far better than one outlet at a time.
  2. Flush the toilet, then immediately test the shower. A visible drop while the cistern refills means there is very little margin.
  3. Ask about the floor and the roof tank, and whether every floor has a reducing valve.
