Where to Stay in Manila for a Business Trip: Makati, BGC, Ortigas and the Airport Compared

Short answer: pick the district by who you are meeting

For a business trip to Metro Manila there are four districts worth considering: Makati CBD, Bonifacio Global City (BGC, in Taguig), Ortigas Center (straddling Pasig and Mandaluyong), and Newport City next to the airport in Pasay. Choose by the location of the offices you are visiting, not by hotel brand or review score. In Manila, cross-district travel time costs more than any difference in hotel category: the same trip can take 20 minutes off-peak and 70 minutes in the evening peak.

Two other areas come up: the MOA complex in Pasay, useful if your trip centres on the SMX convention centre, and Quezon City, where many local corporates and media sit. Makati CBD: banks, lawyers and long-established firms

Makati CBD is the oldest and deepest business district in Metro Manila, with major bank headquarters, law firms, accounting practices and family-owned conglomerates clustered along Ayala Avenue. If your trip involves opening a corporate bank account, meeting counsel, discussing tax with an accountant, or calling on a Philippine group that has been trading for decades, this is the shortest path.

• Walking radius — Ayala Avenue plus Legazpi and Salcedo Villages; most meetings fall within a 10-15 minute walk, with Greenbelt and Glorietta for hosting.
• Support services — the highest density of bank branches, notaries, document and printing services and quick business dining anywhere in the metro.
• Trade-offs — building stock varies in age, and footfall drops noticeably at night on some peripheral streets.

Practical tip: group meetings by street so a half-day covers one building or two adjacent ones, and give a cross-town trip to BGC its own half-day rather than shuttling through the afternoon peak. If you are opening a corporate account, confirm the document list and the appointment with the bank two weeks before you fly, or the trip only gets as far as lodging papers.

BGC: multinationals on a planned grid

BGC is a master-planned CBD in Taguig with a regular street grid, wide pavements and newer buildings, and it holds a large share of the multinational, technology and outsourcing-client offices in Metro Manila. For a first-time visitor it is the most predictable district: addresses are easy to find and walking between meetings is straightforward.

• Walking radius — the core along 5th Avenue, 32nd Street and High Street crosses north to south in 15-20 minutes on foot.
• Support services — the widest choice of international dining, coffee-meeting space and coworking or meeting rooms rentable by the day.
• Trade-offs — accommodation and food cost more than Ortigas, and the access points onto EDSA and Kalayaan back up badly in the evening peak.

If the trip includes scouting office space, BGC and Makati hold the Grade A stock — but a registered address and an operating address are not the same thing in compliance terms, so settle that before signing a lease.

Ortigas Center: the value option

Ortigas Center usually carries the lowest room and dining costs of the three CBDs while sitting close to local manufacturers, traders and the agencies that handle government filings. If the budget is tight or the trip involves repeated errands rather than boardroom meetings, this is the efficient choice.

• Walking radius — offices concentrate along ADB Avenue, Julia Vargas Avenue and Emerald Avenue, with several large malls holding banquet and function space.
• Support services — good choice of hosting venues and Chinese restaurants, plus printing, courier and translation services.
• Trade-offs — long blocks and less continuous pavement than BGC, so short hops often need a car; arterial roads queue in both peaks.

Hosting a dinner here typically buys more room for the same budget. Ask your host contact about local convention on who pays and when to start — it differs from Chinese practice.

Newport City and the airport belt: buying time, nothing else

Newport City in Pasay sits across the road from NAIA Terminal 3, and its only real advantage is that it reduces airport transfer time to almost nothing. That makes it rational for a red-eye arrival or a dawn departure, and irrational as a base for a multi-day itinerary in the CBDs.

Commute times, and why the ranges are so wide

Schedule Manila trips against a range, not an average; peak and off-peak commonly differ by a factor of two to three. The table below gives planning ranges from experience, not official data — actual times depend on the day.

Three variables widen those ranges. The EDSA rehabilitation run by the Department of Public Works and Highways began on 24 December 2025 with an announced timeline of roughly eight months in phases; regular works run 22:00 to 04:00 lane by lane with roads reopened by 05:00, and weekly DPWH advisories give the current sections. Number coding keeps vehicles off the road one weekday based on the last digit of the plate, with hours and exemptions varying by city under MMDA and local rules — ask your driver whether the car is coded today. Getting a receipt your finance team will accept

Register your billing details at check-in, not at check-out, or you will leave with a guest folio that no head office will reimburse. In the Philippines the taxpayer prints or generates its own receipts, but only under prior authority from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the document must carry the company name, TIN and authority number.

One recent change matters: under the Ease of Paying Taxes Act (RA 11976, 2024) and the BIR's implementing rules, the invoice replaced the Official Receipt as the primary sales document for services, with the OR moved to a supplementary role; both formats still circulate during the transition, and current BIR rules govern. After check-in: a short operating checklist

Once the district is settled, the trip is shaped by a handful of small decisions: how you move in and out of buildings, how you get online, where you host, and what to do when a meeting moves across town.

1. Booking — confirm a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage, check whether meeting rooms rent by the half-day, and put the flight number, terminal and arrival time into the booking notes.
2. Arrival day — ask about building access and security routing, save the hotel's full English name and street address on your phone for ride-hailing and forms, and buy a local SIM or pocket WiFi on arrival rather than relying on hotel Wi-Fi for video calls.
