- That it is actually your meter. Condos and rowhouses often have a whole bank of meters, and guessing by position is how people end up auditing a neighbour's consumption. Match the meter number printed on the meter against the meter number on your bill — that is the reliable check. Do this on the day you move in.
- Whether a multiplier applies. Ordinary residential meters are direct-reading with a multiplier of 1, so the difference in readings is the consumption. - The display cycles. Many electronic meters rotate through screens every few seconds — cumulative kWh, plus time, demand in kW, time-of-use registers, and self-test codes. What you want is the screen labelled kWh, carrying the largest value, that grows over time. Watch a full rotation before deciding which screen to copy.
- Time-of-use meters show multiple registers. If several numbered readings appear, the bill will normally itemize them the same way; copy them in matching order. Ordinary households rarely encounter this.
- Don't drop the decimal. Some meters display one decimal place. Record it, or your monthly difference will be off by a fraction of a kWh — trivial in money, but enough to make you doubt your own arithmetic.
- Photograph rather than transcribe. Take a phone photo each month with the meter number and the reading in the same frame; the phone timestamps it. In a dispute, that timestamped sequence is the strongest evidence you can produce, particularly against a landlord or building admin.

Two smaller points that save arguments later. Second, if the meter sits inside a locked enclosure you cannot access, raise it with the landlord or building administration on day one. An older mechanical meter usually has four or five small dials, each representing one digit — ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, units from left to right. Step by step:
- Start at the leftmost dial and work right. Each dial yields one digit from 0 to 9; strung together they form the reading.
- Pointer between two digits, take the smaller. Between 3 and 4, record 3. Between 9 and 0, record 9, not 0.
- Pointer apparently exactly on a number? Check the dial to its right. If that dial has already passed 0, take the digit indicated. If the dial to the right is still near 9, this digit has not yet completed its turn, so step back one. This is where dial meters get misread most often.
- Ignore the small fast-spinning disc. It is a verification wheel and takes no part in the reading.
Self-check: compare your reading against the previous reading printed on the bill. Yours should be equal to or greater than that figure, by a plausible amount. If yours is lower, you misread — a mechanical register does not run backwards unless the meter was replaced or rolled over.

Consumption = current reading minus previous reading, times the multiplier if one applies. The result is in kWh. There is no more complicated formula.
An illustrative calculation (figures are for demonstration only and represent no actual tariff):
- Last month's reading: 05320
- This month's reading: 05545
- Consumption = 5545 − 5320 = 225 kWh
- Estimated cost = 225 x the bundled rate per kWh for that month (which moves monthly; your bill's printed figure controls)
Where people go wrong:
- Rollover. A five-digit register passing 99999 returns to 00000. Rare, but when it happens consumption = (100000 − previous reading) + current reading. If a reading appears to have shrunk, consider this second, after considering a misread.
- Meter replacement. A new meter starts from a low number and the bill splits the period. On replacement day, record both the old meter's final reading and the new meter's starting reading.
- Forgetting the multiplier, especially on commercial service.
- Unequal cycle lengths. A reading cycle may run 28 days or 33. Comparing raw monthly totals is therefore unfair; compare average daily consumption — kWh divided by days in the cycle. That is the correct way to tell whether usage genuinely rose.

What kWh Actually Means, and How It Maps to Your Appliances
A kilowatt-hour is the energy used by a 1 kW appliance running for one hour. That is what the meter accumulates and what the bill charges for. Understanding the unit is what lets you connect "which appliance is eating my money" to the number on the meter.
Conversions you can use directly:
- A 1.0 kW (1000 W) appliance running one hour = 1 kWh. Ten hours = 10 kWh.
- A 1.5 HP split-type air conditioner sits roughly in the one-kilowatt-plus range, varying widely with model, inverter status and ambient temperature. Eight hours overnight lands somewhere around 8-10 kWh — run daily, air conditioning alone can account for a few hundred kWh a month. - Water heaters, irons and kettles draw heavily but briefly; a refrigerator draws lightly but never stops. Neither category is negligible.
- To estimate any appliance: power in kW x hours per day x 30 = kWh per month. Run this across the household and the big consumers reveal themselves quickly.
A useful field test: to measure what one appliance really draws, switch off everything else including standby loads, run only that device, note the meter reading, and read again an hour later. The difference is its real hourly draw. This beats reading the nameplate, which states rated maximum rather than typical operation.
A Monthly Self-Audit Routine
Audit the kWh, not the peso amount. Match the bill's previous and current readings against your own records, then check average daily consumption. Amounts move with tariffs; kWh does not lie.
- Read and photograph near the reading date each month. Same time each cycle, meter number and reading in one frame, all in one phone album.
- When the bill arrives, check three figures: meter number, previous reading, current reading. The bill's previous reading should equal what you recorded last month, allowing a day or two of drift. A mismatch is the strongest signal that something is wrong.
- Compute daily average: consumption divided by days in the cycle, and compare against prior months' daily averages rather than raw totals.

The most common rental dispute over power is a landlord billing from a private submeter at a per-kWh price they set themselves, typically above the utility's bundled rate. Detecting a markup requires two data sets: your submeter difference, and the main meter's official bill.
How to check:
- Write the starting reading into the contract or receipt on signing day and photograph it. Without an agreed starting figure there is nothing to argue from.
- Ask how the unit price is derived. The fair method is to take the utility bill's total amount divided by its total kWh to get a bundled peso-per-kWh figure, then multiply by your submeter consumption. If the landlord quotes a fixed unit price that never changes while the utility's rate moves every month, the difference is their margin.
- Ask to see the month's main bill. A legitimate landlord will show it; you only need two numbers, total amount and total kWh. Refusing to show it while insisting on a fixed rate means electricity is being sold at a profit.
- Check the allocation. Where several units share one main meter, the sum of the submeters should approach the main meter total, with a small difference for line loss. If the sum falls well short, ask who is consuming the remainder — common lighting? A water pump? The landlord's own unit? — and how it is apportioned.
- Condos work differently. Many buildings meter centrally and bill through admin under rules written into the house rules. Ask before moving in, not when the first bill arrives.

Your Reading Doesn't Match the Bill: Work Through It in Order
Rule out your own misreading first, then estimation, and only then suspect a faulty meter or a billing error. That order saves a great deal of wasted complaining.
- Confirm the meter number. Reading a neighbour's meter is the single most common cause, especially in buildings with banked meters.
- Confirm you read the right screen. Copying demand in kW instead of the cumulative kWh register produces numbers that cannot possibly reconcile.
- Check for an estimated reading. It is flagged on the bill, and estimated and actual months compensate for each other.
- Account for date differences. If you read on the 5th and the meter reader came on the 8th, three days of consumption belong to the bill and not to your figure.

One case deserves separating out: readings and daily averages are normal but the peso amount is clearly higher.
