Passport validity and authorised stay are separate timelines that meet at the moment you file.

The granted period can be capped. What is granted will not normally run past the validity you have left, whatever bracket you ask for.

Replacement creates a gap. While the book is with the issuing authority you can neither extend nor produce an original for anything else.

The correct order, in four steps

1. Find where the two timelines cross. Whichever expires first decides what you do first.
2. Stay expiring first, validity sufficient: file normally, but plan around what the remaining validity allows rather than the bracket you want.
3. Passport expiring first: replace, then extend, allowing for the gap and scheduling nothing into it.
4. Carry the records across as soon as the new book arrives. Only then is the chain intact.

Three things to confirm about replacement

Replacement is handled by your own mission or issuing authority, so its rhythm sits outside the Philippine line.

How long it takes and whether you keep the book meanwhile — this alone sets the length of the gap.

Whether any interim proof is issued, and whether receiving offices accept it. Do not assume they do.

Four things not to do during the gap

• Do not schedule departure. No book, no flight, and the ticket is usually lost.
• Do not let your stay expire inside the gap. That is the arrangement that turns into an overstay.
• Do not plan transactions requiring the original, including accounts, registrations and notarisation.
• Do not assume interim proof works everywhere. Confirm with the receiving office first.
