What a 9A agent actually buys you: two things

Getting the transaction right — whether this round is a monthly extension or a visa waiver, whether it can go through the online system, whether your accumulated stay now triggers alien registration matters, and which overstay band applies if you are late. Choosing wrong costs you the whole trip. And the counter trip itself — a day not taken off, a queue not joined.

Is a 9A agent trustworthy? Four checks you can run today

1. A company registration you can look up — full name and number, status active, scope covering this work.
2. An address you can walk into, with staff and signage.
3. An official receipt in the company's name.
4. Contract party, receipt party and bank account all matching, on a corporate account. A request to pay a personal account is a stop sign.

Then one more, specific to this work: ask for their BI accreditation number and its expiry. The Charter names the travel agent's BI accreditation ID in its supplementary requirements, so this is the Bureau's own credential for the role.

How 9A cost breaks down, and why there is no universal price

1. Government fees — published, but not one number: rates differ by transaction; within a transaction they are banded by age (minor, 14–15, 16 and above); express lane is separate; alien registration matters may be triggered at the same time; and overstay carries its own banded component. So how much per person has no answer before the transaction and age band are fixed.
2. Service fee — what the agent earns, with inclusions stated.
3. Variable cost — further documents, a second submission of the passport, a repeat trip, peak periods. Unpriceable in advance, but the charging rule must be written down.

What can be delegated, and what stays with you

Delegable: deciding the transaction, preparing and checking documents, form filling, and the filing, payment and release steps that current rules allow a representative to perform — with an SPA and the representative's ID, or through an accredited firm.

Not delegable: steps involving identity verification and biometric capture; and your own grip on your stay dates — nobody knows your entry date better than you, and outsourcing that knowledge is a common route into overstaying.
