Can You Still Extend After Overstaying? Three Tiers by How Long It Has Run

First, count the days accurately

Every later step depends on this number, so get it right before asking anything else.

Count from the expiry on your most recent annotation or receipt — not the visa sticker and not your memory. See how the expiry date is counted.

Do not estimate in months. Overstay is computed on an established basis, and a mismatch between your figure and the counter’s costs you, not them. Bring the passport and every past receipt.

Three tiers, three routes

Short overstay. Usually settled at a regular window in a single visit: settle, update, continue. The only thing that matters here is going soon, because delay moves you into the next tier.

Middle band. More verification, possibly a higher-tier office, and stricter documents. Six months is a visible threshold — see overstaying beyond six months.

Extending and settling are not the same act

Updating your stay does not erase the overstay. It has already happened on the record; what follows is settlement and correction, not deletion.

So the order is fixed: restore lawful status first, then decide how you want to stay.

The most common error from reversing that order is booking a flight first. Turning up at the airport unsettled usually does not work — see leaving the Philippines with an expired visa.

Five steps, in order

1. Compute the days and list unresolved items, with passport, old passport and all receipts.
2. Identify the receiving office — overstay runs on a different line, see where to settle an overstay.
3. Assemble documents, which are usually heavier than for a routine extension — see documents for settling an overstay.
4. Complete settlement and updating, and collect every receipt, checking name, passport number and dates on each.
5. Then choose: stay on, change status, or leave — departure has its own clearance requirements, see what departure requires.

Step one is the one never to skip. Filing on an unverified day count usually sends you back to the start.

Four ways people make it worse

• Waiting. The costliest, because it moves you between tiers and the tiers are not linear.
• Booking the flight before settling. Wrong order, usually a wasted ticket.
• Engaging anyone who promises an outcome. No one can guarantee a determination; that sentence is a reason to stop. See choosing an extension provider.
