Choosing a Visa Renewal or Extension Agent in the Philippines: Who Initiates, and What Can Be Delegated

Work out who initiates before you work out who to hire

• Work visa (9G): the employer. The applicant is the company. See 9G renewal.

Four things you can verify yourself

1. A company registration you can look up.
2. An address you can walk into.
3. An official receipt in the company's name.
4. Contract party, receipt party and bank account all matching, on a corporate account.

Then ask for the BI accreditation number and its expiry. The Charter states representative filing requires a Special Power of Attorney with the representative's valid ID, or a photocopy of the travel agent's BI accreditation ID. Also note that anyone who has actually done this will ask three questions first: which visa you hold, the date your last filing ran to, and how long is left.

How renewal cost breaks down

1. Government fees — published, but not one number: they follow the transaction filed, may be banded by age, add express lane separately, may trigger alien registration costs, and carry a band for overstay.
2. Service fee — choosing the transaction, preparing documents, the counter trip, and diary management.
3. Variable cost — further documents, a second passport submission, a repeat trip, peak periods, extra notarised documents.

What can be delegated

Delegable: choosing the transaction, preparing and checking documents, form filling, permitted filing, payment and release, and diary management. Not delegable: whatever the initiator must do (employer signatures, school documents, spouse co-signature); identity verification and biometric steps; and your own grip on your expiry dates.

On passports: insist on a written acknowledgement stating what was taken, when, when it returns and who is responsible. See when a passport is withheld.
