Start with the passport, not the rule
The book is with the office. Do not book anything, and do not plan transactions needing the original.
You hold the book and the filing is open. Now the paper in your hand matters: an acknowledgement proves you filed; it is not a status document and does not automatically let you move freely.
The filing is complete and annotated. This is the only state in which travel is a normal arrangement — check the annotation as set out in what you receive after an extension.
Confirm both facts before booking. Skipping that is the most common way people lose a ticket on this line.
How the four categories differ while pending
Visitor extensions are short enough that most people never face this; where it arises, finishing before travelling is usually safest.

Three arrangements, three costs
Finish the filing, then travel. Costs time, carries least risk, and is usually right. Estimate with how long an extension takes.
Withdraw or pause, travel, then refile. Not available in every category — ask the receiving office. The cost is that this round’s effort may be lost.

Four confirmations before you book
- When the original comes back, and whether collection is documented.
- Whether your paper is usable at departure — ask the office rather than deciding yourself.
- Whether anything else is unresolved: the card, annual steps, items needing clearance.
- What status you return on, since re-entry may restart the count — see how the expiry date is counted.
The fourth is the one people skip, thinking only about getting out rather than what the stay looks like on return.

Confirm the state of the file: open and under review, queried for documents, or completed and awaiting collection. Each is handled differently.

Can I travel while my extension is pending?

Can the acknowledgement be used as a visa?
