What You Receive After an Extension: Five Checks Before You Leave the Counter

Updated 2026-09-19·5 min read·Visa & HR

You normally leave with a new annotation in the passport and one or two receipts, each serving a different purpose — and all of them must be checked before you walk away. An error costs you later rather than now: at the next filing, at departure, or when your stay record is questioned.

Three items, three purposes

The new annotation is direct evidence of how long you may stay and the source of your next baseline date — see how the expiry date is counted.

The payment and acknowledgement records prove what you filed and paid on a given day, and they reconstruct the facts if the record chain is ever questioned.

Any additional transaction produces its own paperwork, most commonly the registration card — see the ACR I-Card renewal guide.

If one is missing, ask at the window whether it is not produced or not yet issued. Do not leave with an open question.

Five checks before you leave

  1. The new expiry date. Read it aloud; do not glance at it.
  2. Name spelling and passport number. A missing letter or a differently placed middle name triggers verification next time.
  3. Whether the bracket matches what you applied for. If it is shorter, ask why — remaining passport validity is a common reason, see extending with an expiring passport.
  4. Dates and reference numbers on the receipts, which are your only handle for later enquiries.
  5. Whether anything remains outstanding, such as a step requiring a return visit.

Three things the receipt is not

Not a visa. It proves you filed; it is not a status document and is not automatically usable at departure — see travelling while a filing is pending.

Not a substitute for the passport. Where an original is required, a receipt will not do.

Not necessarily your expiry date. Filing date, payment date and authorised-stay expiry are three different figures, and confusing them puts your whole schedule out.

Two minutes of filing saves a trip

Photograph each receipt, name the file by date, and store it somewhere you can open from anywhere; keep the paper in one folder in date order.

Update a four-column table: date, transaction, reference, new expiry. Your next schedule then reads from the table instead of the passport.

It pays off at the next filing, when your stay history is questioned, and when a passport is replaced — see transferring a visa to a new passport and what documents an extension needs.

If something is wrong

Noticed at the window, raise it immediately. The data is still with the office and the correction path is shortest.

Noticed later, do three things: write down exactly what is wrong and what it should say; gather the passport, the receipts and the source documents proving the correct information; and return to the issuing office or wherever it directs you.

Never annotate or alter the document yourself. That converts a correctable error into an unexplainable one.

And do not wait. Errors raised late usually have to be resolved before anything else can proceed — see extension precautions. Yixing holds SEC registration CS202009551 and BI accreditation CA-202624381-1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I receive after an extension?

Normally a new annotation plus one or two payment and acknowledgement records, with extra paperwork if another transaction was included. If one is missing, ask whether it is not produced or not yet issued.

What should I check before leaving?

Five things: the new expiry, name and passport number, the bracket granted, dates and reference numbers, and anything outstanding. Read the expiry aloud rather than glancing at it.

I was granted less than I asked for.

Ask why at the window. Remaining passport validity is a common reason, since what is granted will not normally run past it — see extending with an expiring passport.

Can the acknowledgement be used as a visa?

No. It proves you filed but is not a status document, is not automatically usable at departure, and does not replace the passport. See travelling while a filing is pending.

Is the date on the receipt my expiry?

Not necessarily. Filing date, payment date and authorised-stay expiry are three different figures; your stay expiry is the one on the annotation.

I found a spelling error after getting home.

Write down the error and the correct text, gather passport, receipts and source documents, and return to the issuing office. Do not alter anything yourself and do not leave it until the next filing.
