Extension, Renewal, Conversion: Four Words, Three Different Transactions

The three transactions behind the words

Lengthening stay within one status. Your category does not change; the date you may stay until moves. Most everyday uses of "extension" and "renewal" mean this.

Moving to another status category, for example from visitor to work or residence. This is not lengthening; it is a change of track, with a different filer, documents and receiving line.

Three real costs of the wrong word

The wrong window. Saying "extension" when you need a conversion sends you to a line that cannot take the filing — see where to file.

The wrong documents. Lengthening and converting have very different document structures, the latter usually requiring third-party issuance — see what documents are needed.

The wrong schedule. Conversions need far more lead time because the chain is longer. Running a conversion on an extension timetable almost never works.

Three questions that place your transaction

Will my status category be different afterwards? No means lengthening; yes means conversion.

Am I dealing with a stay period or with a card or certificate? A card or certificate is a reissue with its own expiry — see how the expiry date is counted.

Who files it? If you can file it yourself it is usually lengthening; if an employer, school or spouse must act, it is usually a conversion.

Answer all three before you ask anyone anything, and your wording will stop misleading them.

Other easily confused terms

• Conversion means changing category, not lengthening.
• Replacement refers to a lost or damaged document, which is not the same as expiry reissue.
• Annual report is a recurring obligation during status, produces no new stay period, and carries its own consequences if missed.
• Visa-on-arrival extension follows its own rules on whether and how far it can be extended.
• "Renewing" a certificate is often not a transaction at all — many documents can only be issued afresh.

When to stop asking about extensions
