Who prepares what

• Tourist extension (9A): you — passport, prior extension receipts, forms. Genuinely self-fileable.
• Work visa (9G): the employer prepares the company-side documents; you chase progress and prepare your own. See 9G renewal.

Four variables

1. Are you the initiator? Tourist extension yes; work, student and marriage no.
2. Can you tell which transaction applies? Monthly extension, visa waiver, online routes, long stay extension and the overstay bands differ in conditions and documents. This is where self-filers most often lose.
3. Is your record clean? Lawful prior stays, receipts kept, consistent name spelling.

When self-filing works

A tourist visa holder with a short stay so far, every prior extension filed on time with receipts kept, the same passport as on entry with identical name spelling, filing for one person only, ample margin before expiry, living where an office is reachable, and a round that falls within the online scope. When to hand it over

1. You have already overstayed. Different entries apply — beyond six months and beyond twelve months are separate transactions, with a notarised letter of explanation required and, in the six-month band, approval by the division chief. See how overstay works.

3. Your records do not match (new passport, name spelling, unsynchronised civil status).
4. The window allows one attempt only.
5. Your category is initiated by an employer or school that is not moving.
6. You cannot attend on weekdays.

What to reserve if you file yourself

Two free weekdays rather than one; a buffer for one request for further documents; your own timetable of last filing date, latest filing date and the alien registration milestones — that table is your responsibility and nobody else's; verifiable sources rather than group chat; and a plan B. A request for further documents is not a refusal.

Four things that stay yours after hiring help

1. Verify the entity, including the BI accreditation number and expiry; the Charter states representative filing needs an SPA with ID or an accredited travel agent's BI accreditation ID.
2. Contract and company-name receipts, with contract, receipt and account all matching.
3. A written passport acknowledgement.
4. Keep your own expiry diary — a lapse costs you, not the agent.
